A Salute to Sarasota Memorial’s 1,400 Nurses
Sarasota Memorial will honor the care and commitment of nurses with a weeklong slate of activities during Nurses Week May 6-12. The national recognition week takes place each year, culminating May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing.

During the annual event, hospital leaders recognize our “Magnet” Nurses of Excellence, presenting awards to the top 10 nurses in the health system who epitomize the values that have made Sarasota Memorial a “Magnet Hospital.” Last year, Sarasota Memorial achieved Magnet® re-designation for the third time, a rigorous challenge accomplished by just 1 percent of the nation’s hospitals.

Awarded sparingly by the American Nurses’ Credentialing Center, the designation identifies hospitals that provide the resources, education and supportive environment necessary to attract and retain the best and brightest nurses.

Preventing Secondary Strokes
Of the 750,000 Americans who have a stroke each year, as many as 14 percent will have a second stroke within a year and up to half within five years.

To reduce the risk of secondary strokes, Sarasota Memorial’s Secondary Stroke and TIA Prevention Clinic provides outpatient services and support to help patients control hypertension, manage stress and cholesterol levels, stop smoking, make recommended dietary or lifestyle changes and monitor medications, such as blood thinners.

May is National Stroke Awareness Month. Learn more: (941) 917-3890 or visit smh.com/stroke.
