Cardiac/Thoracic Surgery Printer Friendly Version Printer Friendly Version Share

Sarasota Memorial’s robotic surgery program leads the nation in minimally invasive cardiac procedures. With a dedicated robotic cardiovascular surgery suite, Sarasota’s cardiac surgeons are employing minimally invasive robotic surgical techniques in a range of cardiac and thoracic procedures, including: mitral valve repair, coronary artery bypass, repair of atrial septal defects, tricuspid valve repairs, thymectomy, lobectomy and VATS lung resection.

Sarasota’s robotic surgeons use the ultra-precise technology to operate through a small series of incisions, resulting in less pain and blood loss and a significantly lower risk of surgical infection. Compared to traditional cardiac procedures, where the chest cavity is opened with one large incision, robotic surgery also offers patients a faster recovery time. Patients can return home from robotic-assisted cardiac surgery in just a few days and resume normal activities in a matter of three weeks.

Medical Leadership

Jeffrey Sell, MD - Chief of Cardiovascular SurgeryJeffrey Sell, MD, cardiothoracic surgeon, joined Sarasota Memorial as its Chief of Cardiovascular Surgery in 2013.  Dr. Sell’s breadth of experience encompasses the entire spectrum of cardiac surgery – from leadership positions in academic settings to building a collaborative, multidisciplinary practice that provided a full range of non-surgical, minimally invasive and open surgical treatments, including pediatric and transplant surgery. He has more than three decades of experience in cardiac surgery, research and analysis, and advancing new minimally invasive procedures.

As chief of cardiovascular surgery, he leads Sarasota Memorial’s interdisciplinary team of cardiologists and cardiovascular and cardiothoracic surgeons.

In addition to his leadership, Dr. Sell performs a full range of cardiovascular and thoracic treatments and procedures, including: coronary artery bypass (on and off pump), percutaneous valve replacement and mitral valve repair, ventricular assist device implants, thoracic aortic aneurism repair and surgery for arrhythmias, among others.  One of his unique specialties is treating adults with congenital heart conditions. Prior to coming to Sarasota Memorial, he spent years repairing complex heart defects in children and performing adult and pediatric heart transplants, which provides a unique perspective and wide range of reconstructive experience to help patients who have grown up with congenital heart conditions.

Paul Vesco, MD, FACS

Paul Vesco, MD, FACS, strengthens and further diversifies the range of robotic and minimally invasive heart, lung and esophageal surgery to Sarasota Memorial patients. His clinical expertise includes surgery for all forms of cardiovascular disease, including high-risk and emergency conditions related to heart attack, congestive heart failure and valve disorders, as well as thoracic conditions caused by benign or cancerous conditions of the lung, chest, and  esophageal. He has an impressive record as a researcher and teacher as well as an active surgical practice. Since 2006, his research interests have been in the fields of robotic assisted thoracic cancer surgery and robotic closed chest coronary bypass with hybrid coronary revascularization.
