Frequently Asked Hurricane Questions for Employees:

Q: How will the hospital be staffed during the storm?

Q: How do I know which team I am on?
Each department is responsible for developing their own staffing plans. Ask your supervisor if you have questions about which team you are on or your responsibilities. 

 

Q: How will I be notified when to come to work? How long will I have to stay and what should I bring?
As a storm approaches, all staff should check the Employee Hot Line, 917-8799, their email and with their supervisor for instructions. The hotline and email will be updated more frequently once a tropical weather watch or warning goes into effect.   

Once the hospital’s hurricane plan is activated, all Response (A) team members must be on the SMH campus by the time communicated through the Hot Line and their department leaders.  Response (A) Team members should be prepared to stay on campus for the duration of the storm, until relieved by a Recovery (B) team member. Please bring your own sleeping gear (sleeping bag, sheet or blanket and pillow), cash, ID badge and several days’ worth of personal hygiene items, clothes, medications, special dietary food, etc. 

Recovery (B) Team members should be sure to have their ID badge with them, as they may need to show it to access the hospital after the storm has passed.

Q: When should I make arrangements for the safety of my family and home?  Will Child Care be available if I’m on the Response or Recovery Teams?
Please make arrangements for the safety of your loved ones and home now, before a hurricane is imminent and you may need to report to work. Sarasota County has a comprehensive hurricane planning guide so you can make personal plans and determine the location of evacuation zones and shelters for your family.

Child Care will be available for pre-registered children of Response (A) and Recovery (B) team members while the staff member is on duty. Staff should bring all necessary supplies for their children (diapers, medicine, formula, sleeping gear, toys, etc).

Q: Does SMH have a pet shelter during hurricanes?
The hospital will open a pet shelter for pre-registered pets of Response (A) team members who have no other pet care options. Since pet shelter space is limited, only employees serving on the Response (A) Team may bring their pets to the SMH pet shelter during a storm. The number of animals permitted per employee will be based on available space. Exotic pets and livestock will not be permitted.
