Sarasota Memorial Opens Venice Anticoagulation Clinic to Help People Safely Manage Blood Thinner Medications

Aug/22/2014

VENICE (Aug. 21, 2014) – Sarasota Memorial Health Care System opened a new outpatient clinic this week to help residents in Venice and surrounding communities safely manage their anticoagulation medications and decrease their risk of developing dangerous bleeding or blood clots.

Doctors typically prescribe anticoagulation medication, including Coumadin, Jantoven, warfarin and low molecular weight heparin, to reduce the risk of dangerous blood clots in people who have had heart attacks, strokes or other blood clotting conditions. But it can be a delicate balancing act: taking too much increases bleeding, while taking too little increases the risk of potentially deadly blood clots.

The Venice anticoagulation clinic will be open Wednesdays by appointment. It is located in the Sarasota Memorial Health Care and Urgent Care Center at Venice, 997 N. US 41 Bypass. It is one of six anticoagulation clinics the health system operates at outpatient campuses in Manatee and Sarasota counties.

Directed by a board-certified cardiologist, and staffed by a nurse practitioner and specially trained nurses, Sarasota Memorial’s anticoagulation clinic team works with patients and their physicians to monitor and adjust their medication dosage. The clinic staff also provides education and support to help manage changes in diet, medicines and other factors that can interact with the medication. Studies show that patients managed by Anticoagulation Clinics experience fewer adverse events, including bleeding and blood clots, as well as fewer hospital visits resulting from these complications.

The clinics’ comprehensive one-on-one approach includes:

Patients at any level of anticoagulation therapy are welcome, but must have a referral from and visit their managing physician at least once a year.
