Community health update 10-5-2014

Oct/05/2014

A patient evaluated for Ebola-like symptoms has been discharged from Sarasota Memorial Hospital.

Sarasota Memorial was on high alert for several hours Friday afternoon after the patient who recently traveled here from West Africa came to the emergency department with symptoms similar to Ebola.

As a precaution, Sarasota Memorial activated the appropriate infection control protocols, including placing the patient in isolation and reporting the case to Florida Department of Health officials. After evaluation by emergency medicine and infectious disease specialists, and in consultation with public health officials, it was determined he did not meet the risk criteria for Ebola testing. The patient’s travel itinerary did not include any high-risk Ebola countries.

He was moved out of isolation, treated and discharged after his condition continued to improve on Saturday.
