Gabe BarnesSARASOTA (Jan. 1, 2012) – Sarasota Memorial Hospital welcomed New Year's baby Gabriel Barnes into the world at 12:07 am today – Sarasota’s first birth in 2012. Gabriel was one of more than four babies whose mothers began laboring at SMH on New Year's Eve.

"We weren’t aiming for it, but it’s pretty cool," Gabriel's mom Robyn Barnes said. She and husband Robert are from North Port and have three other children. Gabriel, a healthy baby boy, weighed 6 pounds, 5 ounces. His mother said he was due on Jan. 28. He’s doing fine, but will stay for a short time in Sarasota Memorial’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Gulf Coast OB/GYN midwife Barb Loughlin, CNM, delivered Gabriel after an uncomplicated pregnancy and labor.

Sarasota Memorial nurses celebrated the birth with a special New Year’s basket filled with gifts and supplies for the baby and non-alcoholic champagne and flute glasses for the parents.
