Parkinson Event Focuses on Latest Research, Treatment and Dance.

This year’s Distinguished Parkinson’s Speakers Event – hosted by Neuro Challenge Foundation and Sarasota Memorial Health Care System – will be held 9 am-noon (registration begins 8 am), Saturday, October 13, at Sarasota Memorial’s Institute for Advanced Medicine, 5880 Rand Blvd., Sarasota (1/2-mile west of I-75 off Clark Road).

Distinguished speakers will include: 

  • Cheryl Waters, MD: Glickman Professor of Clinical Neurology at Columbia University. Dr. Waters is an engaging speaker you won’t want to miss. She uses real case studies and engages the audience. Internationally known, Dr. Waters has been involved in the testing of all new PD medications since 1988. Dr. Waters has been involved in establishing national guidelines for the surgical treatment of Parkinson’s disease.
  • David Leventhal: founding teacher and program manager, Dance for PD®, at the Mark Morris Dance Group, New York. David will lead an informative presentation and demonstration on the role of creative dance in managing Parkinson’s symptoms. Additional dance demonstration with boxed lunch for $15.00. Registration required.
  • Dean Sutherland, MD, PhD: nationally known and locally based founder of Southeastern Center for Parkinson Disease; and our Medical Director of Neuro Challenge Foundation; Dr. Sutherland will present the latest emerging information in Parkinson’s research. Audience participation encouraged in Q&A style.

It is estimated that as many as 1.5 million people in the United States have PD. In Southwest Florida, it is projected that approximately 9,000 people have PD and another 5-10,000 are directly affected as professional or family caregivers.
