Printer Friendly Version Printer Friendly Version

SARASOTA, Fla. (March 4, 2013) – Does breastfeeding protect against obesity? Can exercise create big, long-term weight changes? No – although millions of people wrongly believe that they can. They are two of the more popular myths circulating about weight loss and obesity, according to a study published recently in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Among others misconceptions, the study debunked the following myths behind weight loss and obesity:

1. Small changes in calorie intake and exercise will create big, long-term weight changes.

2. Hefty, rapid weight loss is linked with poorer long-term outcomes than gradual weight loss.

3. Physical education classes in their current form play an important role in preventing childhood obesity.

4. Breastfeeding protects babies against obesity later.

5. Sexual activity burns 100 to 300 calories.

Now for some truths, according to Sarasota Memorial nutrition experts:

6. Genes play a role in one's weight, but do not always predict future health.

7. Diets effectively reduce weight when combined with exercise and behavioral changes.

8. Meal replacements and following meal plans do aid in weight loss.

9. Some weight-loss drugs help individuals achieve meaningful weight loss.

10. Bariatric surgery—in appropriate cases—does promote long-term weight loss and decreased risk of diabetes and mortality.
