Sarasota Memorial CEO Selection Update

Printer Friendly Version Printer Friendly Version

David Verinder, Interim DEOJuly 7, 2014 - The Sarasota County Public Hospital Board’s search for a permanent CEO is now under way. The Board has established a search committee made up of the nine elected board members, as well as the former and current Chiefs of Staff.

To ensure an inclusive and collaborative approach, the Board has formed several small advisory groups made up of representatives from key stakeholder groups, including physicians, hospital leaders, nurses and non-clinical staff, Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation representatives, volunteers and community members. The advisory groups will conduct interviews and provide feedback to the search committee. Ultimately, the nine-member Hospital Board will vote on the selection and hiring of a final candidate.

Sarasota Memorial’s Chief Operating Officer David Verinder was appointed interim CEO, effective June 1, after former CEO Gwen MacKenzie stepped down to accept a national leadership role with Ascension Health.

Because he has played such a significant role in the progress Sarasota Memorial has made to date and in the health system’s executive succession plan, the Board will evaluate Verinder’s candidacy for the permanent CEO position first, and then determine if it will embark on a national search. They hope to complete his evaluation by early August.

Verinder joined Sarasota Memorial in 2006 as chief financial officer and has served as COO since 2010. In those roles, he played a key role in Sarasota Memorial’s financial turnaround – helping it earn two bond-rating upgrades – and its successful outpatient services expansion. The turnaround also allowed the organization to begin its long-overdue campus improvement plan and construction of the new Courtyard Tower. Verinder shepherded those projects during a challenging recession, helping to ensure they stayed on track and on budget.
