Proposed Rehab Facility Discussed at Community Workshop

Wednesday evening, July 16, members of the community attended the City of Sarasota’s neighborhood workshop to learn about Sarasota Memorial’s proposed new comprehensive rehabilitation facility which would replace the current 30-year old unit located in the two upper floors of the hospital’s East Tower.  While it has undergone several décor changes over the years, the current unit is long overdue for major upgrades and renovations as it contains mostly semi-private rooms and shared bathrooms.

Preliminary plans call for the Retter wing, which is the hospital’s oldest building, to be torn down and a replacement Rehab facility to be built in its place on the north side of Arlington Street, between Laurent Place and West Hospital Drive.

The project is in the initial planning and design phase.  Conceptual plans call for a facility that would be 4 to 5 stories tall and up to 85’ in height.  The first floor would consist of parking; the next three floors would contain relocated outpatient and inpatient physical rehabilitation services and administrative offices; and the top floor would accommodate mechanical, electrical and fire protection equipment.

It will take two years to design and build the facility at an estimated cost of $40 to $46 million.  The new facility is slated to open by the end of 2016.
