You may see news reports today or over the weekend about a patient who was evaluated at our hospital today for Ebola-like symptoms.

We were on high alert for several hours this afternoon after a patient who recently traveled here from West Africa presented to our emergency department with symptoms similar to Ebola.

The patient has been admitted for treatment and observation, but doctors who evaluated the patient – both emergency medicine and infectious disease specialists – say he does not meet the CDC criteria for Ebola testing and that it is “highly unlikely” he has the Ebola virus. The patient’s travel itinerary did not include any high-risk Ebola countries.

As a precaution, Sarasota Memorial activated the appropriate infection control protocols, including placing the patient in isolation and reporting the case to Florida Department of Health officials. Supervisors at the health department confirmed the patient did not meet the risk criteria for Ebola testing.

Many thanks to the physicians and staff who demonstrated our readiness to handle a difficult situation. We appreciate all that you do!
