SMH Announces Physician of the Year, Lifetime Achievement Winners for 2014

SARASOTA (Oct. 29, 2014)  – Sarasota Memorial honored two outstanding physicians for their service to the hospital and community on Tuesday. Former Chief Medical Officer and Psychiatrist Parlane Reid, MD, was awarded the health system's 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award, while Infectious Disease Specialist and Hospital Epidemiologist Manuel Gordillo, MD, was named 2014 Physician of the Year. Both physicians were selected by a committee of physician leaders and honored at Sarasota Memorial’s annual medical staff meeting Oct. 28.

Lifetime Achievement, Parlane Reid, MDLifetime Achievement: Parlane Reid, MD
Longtime Sarasota Psychiatrist Parlane Reid, MD, was awarded the hospital’s highest honor – Sarasota Memorial’s Lifetime Achievement Award. During his more than 35 years as a practicing psychiatrist, Reid has been recognized locally, regionally and nationally for his efforts to improve the lives of people with mental illness through clinical practice, research, community outreach and public policy/advocacy work. Over the years, Reid has worked with adults, couples, adolescents and families, both in private practice as well as in hospital and residential treatment settings. He has served in a number of leadership positions at Sarasota Memorial during the past 20 years, including Vice President of Medical Affairs, Chief of Staff and Medical Director of the health system’s Bayside Center for Behavioral Health. He continues to work with Sarasota Memorial’s First Physicians Group providing psychiatric care for patients at Bayside and volunteer for mental health causes and events of social and medical significance.


Physician of the Year, Manuel Gordillo, MDPhysician of the Year: Manuel Gordillo, MD
Since 1992, Infectious Disease Specialist Manuel Gordillo, MD, has been providing care and consultative services to patients in private practice as well as to hospitalized patients. In 2008, he also took on the additional role and responsibilities as Sarasota Memorial’s epidemiologist and chair of Infection Control, providing leadership and knowledge in an area of critical importance to patient safety and rapidly changing field of medicine. In recent months, he has worked tirelessly with key leaders and front-line staff to ensure it has the equipment, training and protocols in place to evaluate and provide safe care for someone with confirmed or suspected Ebola.
