New Rehabilitation Facility - Locator Map

With its new Courtyard Tower now a year old, planning and design are under way for a new $46 million rehabilitation facility on Sarasota Memorial Health Care System's main campus.

The Sarasota County Public Hospital Board granted approval in September to demolish one of the oldest buildings on the main campus – the Retter wing built in 1962 – and construct a 4-story, state-of-the-art rehabilitation facility in its place on the north side of Arlington Street, between Laurent Place and West Hospital Drive. Construction is slated to begin early next year and the facility is slated to open to patients in the winter of 2016.

When complete, the new facility will connect seamlessly on multiple floors to the south wing of the hospital, but will be designed as a freestanding center with separate entry ways and parking to meet the complex medical, rehabilitation and mobility needs of patients with brain injury, stroke, spinal cord injury, amputation, neurological disorders and orthopedic and musculoskeletal conditions.

"Our goal is to provide a specialized facility that reflects patient- and family-centered care along with the latest clinical and design features to care for and promote healing for patients recovering from a range of physical and neurological challenges," said Maria DeCarlo, Executive Director of Sarasota Memorial’s Post Acute/Rehabilitation Services. "The new building will provide both inpatient and outpatient rehab services, which are critical components of our continuum of care.”

The new facility will replace the hospital’s existing 34-bed Comprehensive Rehabilitation Unit (CRU), which is currently housed in the upper floors of the EastTower, and provide space for a full array of specialized rehab programs and services people can access on an inpatient and outpatient basis. The inpatient unit will have all private rooms and baths and the latest design features to accommodate patients using a variety of mobility aids. Like the current unit, the new CRU also will include a rehab dining room, gym and a mini “apartment” to retrain patients in daily living activities, as well as new amenities, such as family lounges and a mobility garden to help patients learn to ambulate on different surfaces.

Preliminary plans call for the facility to be 4 stories tall, with the first floor consisting of covered parking with a dedicated entrance, drop off and mobility garden, the second floor housing administrative offices and outpatient services, and the two upper floors (levels 3 and 4) featuring new patient care units for people who need more intensive inpatient rehabilitation.
