Certified Comprehensive Stroke CenterSARASOTA, Fla. (May 18, 2015) – Sarasota Memorial has earned Comprehensive Stroke Center Certification from DNV Healthcare, one of the leading accrediting organizations in the nation.

The prestigious certification shows that Sarasota Memorial meets the highest standards of stroke care, from diagnosis and treatment to research, rehabilitation and education. It joins an elite group of hospitals, as Comprehensive Stroke Centers are typically the largest and best-equipped, and provide the most complex and advanced procedures to treat any kind of stroke or stroke complication. The certification process included a rigorous on-site survey, demonstration of the best clinical practices and procedures and proof of superior outcomes.

“We are very proud of our stroke team and the work they have done to increase community awareness that stroke is an emergency just like a heart attack; through their efforts, we have dramatically increased the number of people receiving life-saving treatment and walking out of the hospital with little or no disability,” said David Verinder, president & CEO of Sarasota Memorial Health Care System.

While Sarasota Memorial has long been recognized for outstanding treatment protocols and the advanced interventions it provides, the national certification is one of the nation’s highest honors in stroke care.

Recently, the team expanded its outreach efforts by opening an outpatient clinic dedicated to preventing secondary strokes among those at risk (those who have had a stroke, mini stroke or TIA and/or those with certain risk factors, such as uncontrolled hypertension). Of the 750,000 Americans who have a stroke each year, as many as 14 percent will have a second stroke within a year. Within five years, studies show 24 percent of women and 42 percent of men will have a second stroke.

Timely response is key. Among other interventions, the clinic team helps coordinate and provide resources, therapies and support to help patients control hypertension, manage stress and cholesterol levels, stop smoking, make recommended dietary or lifestyle changes and monitor medications they may need, such as blood thinners, to lower their risk of stroke.

“Our goal is to educate, motivate and support patients through what often is a life changing event,” said Mauricio Concha, MD, stroke neurologist and medical director of Sarasota Memorial’s Comprehensive Stroke Center. “By providing 1-on-1 counseling, we hope to prevent them from ever having to experience it again.”
