SMH Hosts 5-Year MEGA-Celebration in North PortSARASOTA, Fla. (Aug. 18, 2015) – In its first five years of operation, more than half a million people have been cared for at Sarasota Memorial’s freestanding ER and health care center in North Port. They came for a variety of reasons – some needed life-saving treatment for heart attacks and strokes. Others hobbled in with scrapes, bumps and burns. A few were in labor and didn’t have time to go to a nearby hospital. Many were preventive in nature – routine check-ups with their primary care doctor, lab work or general X-ray or imaging studies.

This month, as Sarasota Memorial concludes the campus’ first five years, the numbers speak for themselves.

WHAT: 5-Year MEGA-Celebration
WHEN: 9 AM - 2 PM • Saturday, Aug. 29
WHERE: SMH ER & Health Care Center
North Port Medical Center
2345 Bobcat Village Center Road,
off Toledo Blade Blvd.

INFORMATION: SMH is celebrating its 5-year anniversary with a Mega-Celebration. The free event will feature family-friendly activities and exhibits – including the world’s largest medical inflatable full-body walk-through exhibit. The MEGA Body measures 50-ft long, 15-ft wide and 12-ft high with larger than life major organs and displays about living a healthy lifestyle. Emergency Services vehicles and an Aeromed helicopter will be on site, along with a teddy bear clinic (the first 200 children will receive a free bear) and other interactive information stations.

“We knew there was a strong need for this kind of facility in North Port, but I’m not sure anyone could predict the sheer volumes we saw from Day 1,” said Sarasota Memorial CEO David Verinder. “It’s been gratifying to see the growth of much needed medical services in the community. By strengthening that medical infrastructure, we’ll continue to attract more and more physicians to the area.”

At the time it opened in September 2009, Sarasota Memorial’s North Port campus off Toledo Blade Boulevard was one of Florida’s first and largest freestanding ERs. Staffed 24/7 by Sarasota Memorial’s board-certified emergency medicine physicians and emergency care nurses, it is equipped with walk-in and ambulance entrances, triage, trauma and exam rooms and a 23-hour observation unit for stabilized patients who need additional monitoring and care after their initial treatment. There have been more than 130,000 ER visits over the past five years.

But the ER makes up just a portion of the two-story 52,600-square foot medical campus. Nearly half a million more people have visited the North Port campus for non-emergency care. The site offers a wide range of diagnostic testing and outpatient care – services such as X–ray, ultrasound, digital mammography, bone density, CT and MRI scans, a clinical laboratory, rehabilitation/physical therapy programs, cardiopulmonary rehab, home health and more.

To ensure greater access to primary and specialty care, Sarasota Memorial also recruited two internal medicine/pediatric specialists to a First Physicians Group practice it opened on the second floor, and leased satellite offices to Florida Urology Specialists and Gulf Coast Obstetrics & Gynecology.

And at this month’s 5-year Mega Celebration, Sarasota Memorial is unveiling a new Community Room on the second floor to accommodate the thriving number of support groups and community health programs in the area.

“The facility really has become an anchor for the residents and medical community,” Verinder said. “We look forward to the next five years!”
